A New Challenge

I guess we’re getting into the swing of challenges here so I would like to offer a general one for writers. Write a prose piece or a poem of any length, any form, on any topic…BUT the goal is to use as few adjectives and adverbs as possible. This is something I’ve been working on, and I think it would be unfair of me to post a challenge without also posting a submission for it.

In writing, strong verbs and nouns are more important, and make more of an impact, than do adjectives and adverbs. The point is not to eliminate them completely, but to become aware of our usage. This should help make our writing more focused and clean.

In another post I will give my poem. I hope to see others. There will be no voting, no badges, yet I do hope you will give it a whirl.

  1. Brilliant idea and I’ve re-blogged it, but I’m so inefficient I’ve re-blogged from the post above! Never mind. I’m sure people will find it via that one. Looks to be very difficult. I can’t manage it at all at the moment. Need to give it some thought. Have tweeted it too, so now you will be inundated!
