Maggie’s Adjective/Adverb Challenge
To write a piece, cutting adverbs and adjectives is difficult, to say the least. I couldn’t even do it in that first sentence, nor this one it seems. It is a challenge, indeed! And there was another, in the third sentence, and this one too.
I suppose I should stop counting them. The object of this exercise, as I understand it, is not to omit all adverbs and adjectives, but to use as few as possible. I am doing my best, and will leave the counting to the creator of this challenge, our dear Maggie. But really…could I have written that last sentence with the same meaning, having left out the word ‘dear’? I suppose I could have. But it would have lost so much.
I have read some works that are overflowing with descriptive words, almost to the point of making me dizzy. I understand Maggie’s point. I try to find interesting descriptive words myself, when I’m writing. While some may overdo it, it is lovely to read words on a page that so beautifully take you to another place, or enable you to feel what the characters or the writer is feeling.
I do not know how successfully I have accomplished the task at hand, but I love writing. I could not in good conscience, pass up this challenge. Thank you, Maggie.

This looks difficult, but I have re-blogged it and hope you get lots of takers. I will give it a shot, but can’t promise to be able to manage!

I actually forgot to include the link to Maggie’s post in mine. She had posted the challenge a little while ago, and had done one herself after. Will comment on your post with those links, and edit to include the link in my post. It is an interesting challenge…and a very difficult one! I didn’t realize how many adverbs and adjectives I use.

I don’t use many adverbs, making a conscious effort to lose them, but adjectives? Not sure I can give them up! I will give this a try though.

Thanks for the trackback, Pat. I wasn’t fully (adv.) successful in my poem, but (adv., I think) again the idea was not to completely (adv.) omit all (adj.) adjectives and adverbs. Sometimes they’re just (adv.) necessary. An author friend of mine tells me I’m the “adverb queen,” so I’m trying to be cognizant of those. And I happen to love adjectives, but am trying hard (adv.) not to depend too much (adv. phrase) on them. It’s hard, I know. I KNOW.

But adjectives are my friend. Adverbs I can do without, there are lots of lovely verbs out there, but I never seem to find nouns that are strong enough to stand alone. They need lots of support from delicious adjectives.
However, I will try!

Anne, I won’t be counting the adverbs and adjectives you used. No way. That’s not the point. I think it brings us to an awareness of how many we might use in a piece of writing, and could be a way to tighten up (oops, adv.) a piece. So please, don’t worry. I’m not going to count. Let’s just (oops, adv.) use this as an awareness.

:) I was just attempting to be funny. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. :) I didn’t really think you were going to count them up. It was interesting though to see how many I use. I use a whole lot of adverbs myself, it seems. Thank you for the challenge! I enjoyed it. :)
