Truth is, we humans are none of us just one thing or another. People love to look at Christians and say “What hypocrites!” For example, I’m a 55 year old grandmother. Someone looks at me and knows I’m a Christian…and how important that is to me. So the image in their minds is one of the ‘church lady’ character on Saturday Night Live…stuffy and prim and proper. And if they see me veer from that in some way, then I’m a hypocrite. If they hear…hey, I sang and played keyboards in a rock band in ’89 and ’90…I love a glass of wine or a marguerita, or a beer on occasion, but just don’t believe in taking it to excess…whoa!! And then if they hear…but I have taken it to excess before…double whoa!! Oh, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg with how much of a regular human being I’ve been who has gone this way or that in my life. And that’s just me. What about the preachers who get caught having affairs? Then it’s, “See there! See the hypocrisy!!” Yet a ‘supposedly’ Christian President can have sexual encounters in the oval office and then lie about it, and it’s “So what? Who cares?”
What is my point with this rant? My point is that every single one of us who is a human being is complex. We’re not ‘all or nothing’ people. Nobody is. And NOBODY should sit and point a finger at anyone else, unless they’ve somehow arrived at perfection.
