TWENTY LINES OR LESS, EVERYDAY.
GENIUS OR NOT.
This community born here on WordPress on October 29, 2011.
Stuck in the quicksand of writer’s block, I needed a writing project with manageable goals to stoke those wonderfully warm right-brain embers.
Through online travels and happenstance being what it is, I happened upon Succour, which further led me to the Genius or Not project, both of which are still standing online, but now defunct.
Thus 20 Lines was born. Yes, I can write 20 Lines, or less. Every day.
Hopefully.
Yes, I can. I can do that.
But I wanted to do more. I wanted a space where other writers could come and share their work. A collaborative, nurturing space. Community. And because I know some extremely talented photographers, the idea to include their work just seemed a natural fit.
One piece a day. Keep going.
I welcome anyone that would like a project to bring their work into the public eye, a few pearls at a time, for both exposure and exercise, for fun and as a challenge.
It’s an exercise in discipline. Join us in this challenge and endeavor and sense of community, and in the end, who knows what we’ll have created together.
Inspiration does exist, but it better find you working. – Picasso
Cheers! Happy writing! Happy photography! Happy everything.
– Melissa
Our thanks are also due to Harry Mathews for inspiring this project (and others). The results of his own genius or not project are collected in his book Twenty Lines a Day, available here.”

So, to get this right…how would you like us to submit our work? Should I put it here in the comments section? Mine will be poetry.
Thanks. Sounds like a fun and motivating thing to do.

Melissa, I asked how to do the “20 lines” blog on a different site-and then read this reply from you to “maggie”, so, I should wait for an “invitation” and then write? I await your reply-thanks.

I’m not off to a stellar start. I wrote a 20-line poem, saved the draft, then wanted to find an image to put with it. That’s when I lost it, so I’ll try again tomorrow. It’s exciting to see my name as part of your group. Thank you.

I think I would like to try contributing something…Just to clarify, I’m not a genius…But I do love to write!

Start with a spark. A word or a line. Make a list. Expand it.Twenty lines sounds like a good goal. Then boil it down or rip it open to see what’s waiting underneath. There are a lot of great ways to prime the practice of writing (and rewriting), including the stimulation of a phrase or line you find in others. As for writer’s block, about the only time I encounter it is when I’m handed a greeting card to sign. And then there’s always the art of improvisation. Start singing! Best wishes to you all — and always be playful.

I need this to get the cobwebs off my writing. I used to write daily, but health issues and family seemed to take the inspiration from me. I’m so enjoying reading your different poetry today that I think it is inspiring me to do more writing!

I will. It is so wonderful that you are inspiring so many to get past those things that block their creativity, through simply writing 20 lines a day. You do realize you are a mentor to many? That is wonderful, and shows your compassion for those who share your artistic gift.

Hello! I would love to join this challenge because I am currently doing A Poem a Day Challenge and posting my photos with each piece. Would I be able to submit here? Thank you.
July 9, 2012 at 2:01 am
Hi, thanks for visiting Source of Inspiration and inviting me here. I post six poems a day seven days a week and have for several years. I actually write more than six a day, my top was 18 and then I ran out of time. How do I do it, people keep asking me. I had never read a blog, did not read poetry and certainly had never written poetry when I started Source of Inspiration. I am disciplined about sitting quietly as I start my day and saying, “What do You want to tell them today?” And then I write as furiously as I can for about an hour and a half. By then, the other demands of the day are calling. I post throughout the day as I have time. I post one piece every four hours to give people around the globe a inspiration to wake up to. Thank goodness for WP’s ability to schedule posts. The only time I do not do this is when I have no electricity or my Internet is down. I try to schedule some in advance for when this happens but a busy schedule does not always allow this. I would like to join you because I believe that the more we use our creativity the more connected to Source we become. Your blog will help everyone develop the confidence and discipline to do something creative every day. Lovely idea. Please send whatever I need to post. BTW, reblogs and other uses of pieces from my blog are permitted as long as they are used in keeping with the spirit of inspiration and are free to everyone. Thanks, Melissa. hugs, pat

I’ve just awarded you the One Lovely Blog Award. You can read more about it here: http://nmnphx.wordpress.com/2012/07/21/lovely-blog-award/
Let me know if you have any questions.
July 23, 2012 at 1:32 pm
It’s a great idea. I started my blog because I kept either losing interest in a piece I was writing or found I was changing the storyline or ideas far too often, to a point where the story no longer made any sense. I sort of lost my interest in writing a bit after that, probably due to myself frustrating myself :) I thought the blog would help keep my writing fresh and keep me in the rhythm of things without taking over my life. I must say it really has helped me. I feel like I’ve changed and grown as a writer since starting my blog. And my confidence in my abilities has grown to a point where I am now able to explore different avenues, like poetry and flash fiction :) I hope this blog of yours is helping you too :) And it’s wonderful to see that you have enabled others to express themselves via your blog!

If you’d like to join, let me know as soon as you can because I believe WordPress only allows us 50 contributors and we’re upwards of 40 now. Best,
Melissa

Brenda, you are welcome to call me this afternoon if I can help, and we can walk through exactly what is happening. Since no one else is having this problem, I assume there is something going on on your PC … The very first thing I would try is a different browser, just to see if you get the same results. I should be around from about 3-5pm in case you’d like to talk. I’ll send my phone number through Facebook. Hope we can discover what the issue is for you!

Hi! My name is Sue, and I’m from SlimKicker, a fitness/diet app and site. I saw your blog yesterday and it captured my interest!
I’m contacting you b/c we’re about to release a fitness tracker (similar to FitBit) early next year, and are looking for bloggers who would be interested in getting 1 for free to review when it is out (negative or positive).
Would you be interested in doing this? You can email me at: sue (at) slimkicker (com) with ‘Review’ in the email heading if you are.
Just to let you know, our site SlimKicker basically turns your fitness/diet goals into a fun level-up game. The tracker will work in conjunction the website, and allow people to track calories burned and number of steps they walk automatically. The more they exercise, the more points they rack up! That’s basically how it will work.
Anyway, hope to hear back either way…
- Sue
P.S. You can choose not to publish this comment as this is more of a private comment :)
